Episode: 003 High Fashion Career, Baby, Hijab, Juggling it All: Sandra Saenz
Updated: Feb 3, 2019
Girls, Sandra is not just some girl doing make up tutorials for fun… she is the real deal!
She's an Editorial Make Up Artist that has a career in the high fashion industry! Sandra Saenz, a convert to Islam and professional editorial makeup artist reveals her biggest fears, her struggles with hijab and her high end fashion career and having a baby.
Q: How did you have the confidence to take on your new faith into your career, into editorial makeup? A lot of girls probably would have said I cannot do this with hijab on.
S: One thing had just lead to another! I’ve always been comfortable and confident in what I do. I am really good at make up! I never thought hijab would get the way of me getting my job done the right way.
Yes girl! Finally we said it! Just jump out of that mindset and get it in your head that that you CAN do this! Be comfortable and confident!
Q: Did you have any fears or doubts? Where there any moments where you thought maybe you couldn’t do this?
S: There is an old answer to this question and there is me now who can answer that. At first, your scared… and you’re so proud of being Muslim that you want everyone to know. And the longer you have it on the more you realize that it’s just part of who you are!
SG: Yeah girl! Don’t look at me and make assumptions. We want you to know we are a practicing faithful Muslim women, but I am also so many other things so please see me as those other things, too!
S: When I first converted I wanted to say everything all at once, and some people get very intimated by that. Now, I don’t let the scarf determine the conversation. Sandra as a person determines the conversation!
Q: Was there a specific moment that happened for you or was it more transitional?
S: It been about a year now I have felt that way. I wear hats and have found myself to feel more stylish and not awkward. I am Sandra!
SG: Yeah girl, just like you put on pants every day (we hope!) you just put on a scarf every day and go about it! We believe in having identity awareness! It took Sandra a few years and us forever, too... but now we know we who we are and we are comfortable with it.
Q: Give us some of your best tips and advice!
S: I was 3 months pregnant and freaking out, I didn’t know what to do. Patty, a major celebrity make up artist, at a conference said that the best of her career came after having my kids because you have a drive that you never had before. The best thing I did was to grab advice from another women, someone you admire.
SG: We totally believe in that #womensupportingwomen.
Girls, you don’t have to look at other women and think that’s who you have to climb over. Look at them and think how can I get to that level. And get inspiration from them. The biggest wall you have to climb is yourself. Don’t’ be unhappy and give yourself some self-care. Invest in yourself!
